Cultured Pearls are formed through a delicate and intricate process initiated by oysters or mollusks. The process starts when an irritant, usually a tiny piece of mantle tissue from another oyster or a bead, is inserted into the shell of an oyster or mollusk. This irritant acts as a catalyst, triggering the mollusk's natural defense mechanism. The oyster or mollusk responds by secreting a substance known as nacre, a mineral substance that smoothly coats the irritant to reduce any potential harm.

This nacre secretion process goes on and on, one layer at a time. With time, these multiple layers of nacre build up around the irritant, forming a pearl. This process can take anywhere from a few months to several years to achieve a decent-sized pearl.

The cultured pearl's quality, size, and shape are influenced by several factors, including the health and type of the mollusk, the size and shape of the irritant, the length of time the pearl is left to form in the mollusk, and the water conditions in which the mollusk lives. Each of these elements play a crucial role in determining the final outcome of the pearl, making every cultured pearl unique.

Grade

Description

Grade A Pearls

Pearls typically have irregular shapes or are semi-round. Small spots, markings, or imperfections are visible on their surface, but may not be easy to see at a distance when worn. Although they usually don`t have the best luster, some A-grade pearls can still look good.

Grade AA Pearls

AA-graded pearls have 80% good luster and are relatively clean, without significant or noticeable imperfections. There may be some flaws or slight blemishes, but these are few and typically only revealed upon close inspection.

Grade AA+ Pearls

High-luster pearls with a 90% clean surface. There are hardly any significant or noticeable imperfections, and they are inconspicuous even upon close inspection. These pearls are of great value since they represent an amazing cross-section of price and quality compared to the higher grades.

Grade AAA Pearls

Pearls with excellent luster, and have a surface that`s 95% free of any blemishes, spots, or imperfection. These are the highest grade of pearls in the "A" Grading Standard that you`ll be able to readily buy.

Gem Graded Pearls

After the AAA grade, these will be the fancy names that each store has for its own best pearls. This category includes the absolute best quality pearls. Although no pearl is perfect, these pearls are as close to perfection as can be reasonably expected.
